The Godless March on Washington

On Saturday, November 2nd, anyone without religion is invited to join the so-named Godless Americans and their march on Washington. Interesting concept anyway and they figure that since everyone else has had some sort of march on Washington then why not, it couldn't hurt. Now I wonder how much if any news it'll generate or whether it will be ignored. They have a sponsor sign up and I don't see any corporations of any sort. It's still quite dangerous to be seen supporting such a group of course. But then, I think that's the point of such a march. Good luck to them.

Guns Across America

Seems they may have finally caught the sniper, or snipers as the case may be. One little note of interest had the NHL and in particular, the Washington Capitals, pulling hats that had the word "Sniper" on them. To me, it seemed ironic that they'd stop selling sniper caps and yet the whole idea of any sort of gun control seems lost on most of Ameica or at least her politicians. I saw a gentlemen trot out the familiar "it's not guns who kill people it's people who kill people" slogan and to prove his point he asked anyone to set a gun on the table in front of them and see if it shot them. I guess living in Canada there's no real way to understand that kind've thinking from the gun culture of the U.S.

Discoveries

I may be mistaken but it seems that there's been a little more science in my newspaper of late. Especially of the astronomical variety anyway. The Kuiper Asteroid Belt lies distant from ourselves beyond Pluto. Seems that one rather large asteroid, Quaoar, was found orbiting the sun just beyond Pluto. Quaoar is one of several large asteroids and is just over half the size of Pluto. There are many who think that Pluto is really just a large asteroid from this belt and shouldn't be designated a planet.

There's also been some excitement about finding what appears to be evidence of a black hole in the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. It was the work of Einstein that predicted the existence of black holes but alas, how to find one? Scientists followed the orbit of a star called S2 that appears to orbit the centre of the Milky Way. The movement of S2 would indicate an object of enormous gravity. Since they can't see it, the conclusion is a black hole.

A Momentary Pause for Reason

Well, lost my blog template when the good folks at blogger revamped some code or something. Took me awhile to remember what I had done to juice up my template so to speak. That's the nifty background and general format you see. That is if anyone is reading or following along. I certainly realize that most of this is for myself but I'm hoping that the odd person may drop in and read a paragraph or two and hopefully go "hmmmmmmm". If you do happen to drop in by all means drop me an email with a link on the left there and tell what you think, if it's made you think even, or even if you think I'm full of crap. If it's the later then by gosh, let's have a beer and talk about it eh ;o).

So where am I. Have I said much new, not really. Most of my arguments for the non-existence of god are familiar. Along the way I hope I've passed along some science too. I realize that it's a fact vs. faith argument and that's where I'll head next. Or hell, right now ... Throughout history there have been conflicts with science and religion. Where science cannot conclude a definite response, faith dares to tread. Faith is now more or less restricted to the supernatural, there isn't much left for it really. This wasn't always the case of course. Faith had the answers for everything, where we came from, how the universe got here, we were indeed the centre of the universe. Christianity sprung from a time in our history when mysticism and magic were the order of the day. Miracles were indeed common place. The advent of science proved a continous source of embarassment for the church. Christianity of course had to attempt to change with it, albeit slowly and often very reluctantly. Articles of faith, once taken literally, are rewritten or sometimes discarded. Quite often in our time, these articles of faith are now said to be "interpreted" to mean something different. For me, the worst argument of all is to fall back upon faith saying it's not comprehensible, we are not meant to know god's ways. The absurdity of that is indeed incomprehensible.
