Star Trek's Atheism

A recent episode of Star Trek Enterprise called Choosen Realm had a decidingly anti-religion theme. To be fair, it was more to do with religious extremism but the message was pretty clear. Since it's beginings Star Trek has shared it's creators' lack of belief in god and this latest episode would've made Gene Roddenberry proud in my opinion. I think it's a natural conclusion to stare up into the starry sky and realize the accident we are here on earth and how miniscule we are in the grand scheme of things. The only thing that's certain as you stare up into a dark star-filled night is that many of those stars you're seeing are not there any longer as it's taken millions if not billions of years for some of them to reach your eye. They've all definitely moved and some no longer exist. I don't think the realization that we no longer need a fairytale to explain this to us should be met with any great trepidation or sadness. I think a sense of wonder is in order.
