The Lightning Rod

The lightning rod was invented in 1752 by Ben Franklin. Many taller structures, especially church spires, were very prone to lightning strikes often destroying a good part of the building and anyone who happened to occupy it at the time. Of course, Christians believed that lightning bolts were either directed by god or worse, sent by Satan and his witches to try and destroy god's sanctuaries. Upon the lightning rod cominginto use, many Christians felt that since lightning came from god himself it was heresy to prevent lightning from doing their work. Common sense eventually prevailed after a few decades of praying did nothing to alleviate the lightning strikes upon churches while local pubs and houses of ill repute seemed immune to god's lightning handiwork.

"The way to see by Faith is to shut the eye of Reason" Ben Franklin
